Damaged MacBook Screen However, if the seller has hidden other damage, you can use it as a bargaining chip or just not buy the computer. Even a single loose screw can indicate that someone has repaired your MacBook without permission, which is not a good sign. Finally, check the display loops. If they fit properly and support the cover adequately, the computer should not fall apart in a sloppy fashion.
Verification #2 – Find out how old your MacBook is
Don’t rely on what the salesperson tells you about the age of your MacBook. They have to decide for themselves if they are lying or not. You can find the production date in the About This Mac section. You can see the date next to the model name in the Overview tab. Get MacBook serial number – in About This Mac If your MacBook does not have an operating system, you can still find out how old it is by going to the Apple Check Coverage site and entering the serial number printed on the bottom of your Mac. You can also find the serial number on the original packaging if the seller has one.
Check #3 – Powering Up the MacBook
Starting a MacBook When you boot up your MacBook, you get a general idea of the performance you can expect. If the computer doesn’t take long to boot up and display the home screen, that’s a good sign. However, if the process takes longer than you would like, this is one of the first warning signs. Loud noises and overheating are another obstacle to overcome. Of course, there may be too much dust in your laptop, but removing it is not as easy as cleaning your MacBook’s screen. If the previous owner did not clean the computer regularly, you should not buy such a laptop.

Exam #6 – Checking the webcam
Not everyone needs a webcam, but you never know when it might come in handy. Maybe you need to video chat with your boss or a colleague, and if you don’t have a working webcam, it can be pretty awkward. To check the status of the webcam, try taking a picture with the built-in Photo Booth app in macOS. You can also download and install Discord, Zoom, or another video chat program and make a video call to someone to verify that the webcam is working properly.
Inspection #7 – Hard disk inspection
Inspecting your hard drive is another thing on the list. Check the general condition. Use the Disk Utility to assess the health of your hard drive. If the hard drive is in poor condition, it may need to be refurbished. Worse: You may have to invest in a new hard drive for your used MacBook, and it’s not worth it! In that case you should negotiate the price with the seller. Second, if you don’t have enough storage space, don’t worry too much because there are many tricks to free up that space, for example. For example, transferring data to iCloud and an external hard drive, or deleting files you don’t need.
